Laminate Flooring – How to Choose Quality and Durable Floors

Abrasion classes – the most important selection parameter

The AC rating determines where you can use laminate. AC3 (31) is the minimum standard for homes with average traffic, while AC4 (32) and AC5 (33) withstand intensive use in offices and commercial spaces. For living rooms and bedrooms AC3 is perfectly adequate, but for hallways and kitchens AC4 or higher is recommended.

Thickness and density – why they matter

Quality laminate has a thickness of at least 8mm, and HDF board density of 850-900 kg/m³ ensures stability and moisture resistance. Thinner laminates (6-7mm) may be acceptable only in rooms with minimal traffic. Thicker laminates (10-12mm) provide better sound insulation and longer-lasting performance.

    Water resistance and moisture protection

Standard laminate only tolerates surface moisture that is quickly wiped away, while waterproof laminate with sealed joints can be used even in kitchens or bathrooms. Check the waterproof rating – some manufacturers guarantee resistance to spilled liquid for up to 24 hours. It's important to use an appropriate underlayment that prevents moisture penetration from concrete.

Locking systems – click or glue-down

Modern laminates use click-lock systems that enable fast installation without glue and easy replacement of damaged planks. Systems like Uniclic or Lock&Fold provide a solid connection without gaps. Glued joints are outdated and make disassembly difficult, so they should be avoided except in specific situations.

Color, texture and patterns – matching your interior

Laminate imitates oak, ash, walnut, pine and exotic woods with textures ranging from completely smooth to deep embossing. Lighter shades visually expand the space, while darker ones add elegance but show every speck of dust. Modern technology also enables concrete, stone or tile decors – popular choices for industrial design.

Beveling and V-groove – details that make the difference

Laminate with beveled edges and V-groove emphasizes each plank like real parquet and visually separates the elements. Without beveling the floor appears as a uniform surface, which is more practical for cleaning but less authentic. A 2-4mm bevel represents a good compromise between aesthetics and ease of maintenance.
