DIN 66399 standard defines six security levels, from P-1 (basic strip-cut) to P-7 (top secret data). For routine office document destruction, level P-3 or P-4 with cross-cut technology that shreds documents into 4x40mm confetti particles is sufficient. Financial institutions and medical offices require micro-cut level P-5 which creates particles smaller than 10mm².

Strip-cut devices shred paper into long strips and are only suitable for non-confidential materials. Cross-cut technology cuts in two directions creating confetti, which is optimal for most offices.
