Your dog must be able to turn around and lie down comfortably, but too much space means heat loss in winter. Measure your dog's height from paws to shoulders and add 10-15 cm for doorway clearance. Width and depth should be roughly 1.5 times your dog's length when lying down.

Sloped roofs prevent water and snow accumulation, while flat roofs may leak during heavy rain. Quality dog houses include ventilation openings that prevent condensation and overheating in summer without creating drafts. The roof should be removable or hinged for easier interior cleaning.

Assembly and yard placement

Position the house in a shaded spot protected from wind, but not in complete isolation – dogs like to monitor household activities. The base should be stable, ideally a concrete slab or wooden platform. Orient the entrance south or southeast so your dog gets natural light without direct sun during the hottest part of the day.

Additional comfort features

Add a soft mattress or blanket to the floor, but choose materials you can easily wash and disinfect. During cold months use straw or specialized thermal bedding instead of fluff that retains moisture. For larger breeds consider houses with windows or partitions so your dog has a defined rest area and movement space.
